Marathon Runner

(Francis Bakin, 2009)

I think today rather than work

Keep on going the usual route

Past City Lights bookstore and all of the suits

Just a little further on the usual route

Once I get to the overpass

I kick through the needles and the broken glass

Though I never look behind

The city has already left my mind

Today I’ll keep down to the sea

This being landlocked it ain’t for me

Once I get a little look around

I bury my eyeballs in the sandy ground

What do you know I’m a marathon runner

Quick twitch trigger at the starting gate

What do you know I’m a marathon runner

Quick ditch lover on the fire escape

What do you know I’m a marathon runner

Late bloomed flower in a diamond mine

What do you know I’m a marathon runner

Catch me as I cross the line

Today I think rather than hurt

Gonna keep on going to the end of the earth

I know I left kinda fast

Gonna run from the future and forget the past

What do you know I’m a marathon runner

Quick twitch trigger at the starting gate

What do you know I’m a marathon runner

Quick ditch lover on the fire escape

What do you know I’m a marathon runner

Late bloomed flower in a diamond mine

What do you know I’m a marathon runner

Catch me as I cross the line
