Clementine

Songwriter

From an early age, Clementine was passionate about writing. She graduated from the University of California with a double major in Creative Writing and Literature, moved to New York City because her favorite writers had passed through there, and then was waylaid by drums through a series of coincidences and strange turns.

It wasn't until the early 2000's, while sitting vigil in a loved one's hospital room for 10 days, that words started to flow once again, and she is now continually writing for Stars Turn Me On, her own solo songs, and other people's projects. For her own songs, she enlists some of the stellar players she has in her orbit to lay down guitar and other instrumental parts.

Clementine's songs marry unique visual images with simple language to create both singable lyrics and stories that cut to the heart. It has become her favorite past-time to write for other singers, channeling each artist's own individual perspective.

"Clementine's words rip with soul and spirit and are crafted with so much personality that you can't help but feel giddy when you read them, and in my case, sing them. You can instantly recognize a Clem lyric! But what's truly remarkable is that she creates those words specifically and uniquely for the artist that she's working for. Everything that she has written for me feels like a part of me and in many cases she has allowed me to express parts of myself that were hidden. Clem is truly magical!"  Mike Bemesderfer, vocalist and producer

The song "Cold Snap" from her debut album won second place in the Lyrics category of the 2008 International Songwriting Competition. You can read and hear it here, as well as purchase the track: Cold Snap.

  • Cold Snap

    (Francis Bakin, 2009)

    It’s a cold snap

    In the shoulder season

A bitch slap of a wind is freezing

No tell motel hanging out by the door

I’d lie and say I ain’t been here before

Young men waiting on the blacktop

Old men coming for the whistlestop

Snow plow churning up the snapshots of the last seen

Why is the light so mean

Old man looking for another scheme

Young girl looking for another dream

Or maybe not dreaming maybe just hanging around

My mind is living on the darker edge of town

How can I worry bout lonesome

When my body is living in Babylon

And the knock on the door is an atom bomb

    What drives men on

    What drives men on

I’m empty again on the chopping block

The sun is shining it’s freaking me out

In the shoulder season it should burn out

Why won’t the light burn out

Why won’t the light burn out

This cold snap is wearing me out

How can I worry bout lonesome

When my body is living in Babylon

And the knock on the door is an atom bomb

    What drives men on

    What drives men on

My hope is hung on the handle of the door

No tell motel don’t disturb anymore

It’s the shoulder season I ain’t been here before

Gonna call it Wonderful, Wonderful U

    It’s a great day at Wonderful U

Gonna school you baby in the finer arts

Of the combustible theory of exotic parts

    You get a gold star

Let me give it to you

Gonna give you a little extra credit

    For your great achievement in

How you get it just right

When I’m ready, ready for school

    It’s a great day at Wonderful U

Sign me up for the pompom club

For the team of You in our School of Love

After the bell intercepting your passes

Sign up for the talent show and I’ll dig you baby

    Now go team Go

Can’t wait until school’s in session

Gonna pass a note try to get detention

    It’s a great day at Wonderful U

  • The World and You

    (Stars Turn Me On, 2012)

I come on out of the door and

    The hill is green

    The slope carries me floating

    Down to the sea

    I know I've left you

And it gives me a pang

But I know my day will bring me back to you again

I'm going to write a love song

Simple words and a simple tune

    No need to complicate the

Simple story of me and you

You come on into the hall there are

    Flowers in your arms

The banging door announces all your charms

The lightening of your smile is fixed in time

I keep it endlessly warming this heart of mine

I'm going to write a love song

Simple words and a simple tune

    No need to complicate the

Simple story of me and you

    This is reality now

    This is a dream

Whatever we didn't know then I

    Don't need to see

Whatever you told me then it

    Still holds true

    This is reality now I'm

    Simply in love with you

There's nothing deep that I'm feeling

    That I wish would stay

When I look back from the future and take

    Stock of today

    Blue sky

    Green field

    Ocean true

That's all I'm wishing for the

    World and You

  • Stars Turn Me On

    (Stars Turn Me On, 2012)

I'm gonna let the lights take me home tonight

I'm gonna let the stars turn me on

I'm gonna let the sun play hide and seek

    Until the dawn

I'm gonna let the train ride me home tonight

    While I look outside

I'm gonna let the road wend me home again

    When it thinks it's time

    There's a golden light

That flashes as I let it go

And there's no way that all those years

I could have ever let it go

I'm gonna let the night take me all the way

    Until the dawn

I'm gonna let my heart just run away

    While I sing this song

It's not unusual to find me

    With my arms open wide

It's not unusual to let the world drive

I'm gonna let the lights take me home tonight

I'm gonna let the stars turn me on

I'm gonna let the room just dream of you

    Until the dawn

  • High Desert

    (Stars Turn Me On, 2012)

    Snow in the back

    Desert in the front

    Tiger in the tank

    Devil in the trunk

Pull out of Lovelock’s Ruby Hills

When Battle Mountain caught up in the grill

It’s heartbreak in the High Desert

    Heartbreak in the High Desert

Mile 5-8 salt on the road

    Salt on the windshield

    Blood on the door

    Can’t help this feeling and

    What I say I’m a

    Tumbleweed heart that’s

    Running away

    Heartbreak in the High Desert

Don’t leave me in the High Desert

Just drag me down the mountain again

    I’m sick and perspired

    With a hurricane eye

Nothing I say gets it right

Flashflood taillight on a granite sky

Your words cut my rock like ice

Got an alluvian fan for a mouth

I can’t help the words that come tumbling out

When we’re a stone’s throw to the end

Just drag me down the mountain again

    Heartbreak in the High Desert

Don’t leave me in the High Desert

Just drag me down the mountain again

  • Gateway

    (Francis Bakin, 2009)

    I could be high

    I could be tight

I could be on my way tonight

I could be boarding the white light

    Lit by blacklight all night

Fuck yeah I’m on my way

    Kitelike and spun away

    Locomotive run away

From the final station of sanity

    So long my gateway drug

I gotta whole lotta feeling whole lotta love

For those nights we spent in a hole in the wall

Hammer in the bed and mirror on the ball and

You got the moves you got the truth

As we’re dancing to the rhythm of misspent youth

But I’m older now for what it’s worth

I got the real thing now

    Another night inside the van

    Another witless type of man

    Another blackout reprimand

    Morning light backhand

I got style I got speed

I got marrow I got need

Another night on the flashback floor

Lookin for more and you’ll give me more

    So long my gateway drug

I gotta whole lotta feeling whole lotta love

For those nights we spent in a hole in the wall

Hammer in the bed and mirror on the ball and

You got the moves you got the truth

As we’re dancing to the rhythm of misspent youth

But I’m older now for what it’s worth

I got the real thing now

I wish I could go back again

To the wrong side of the windowpane

    I don’t think I’d come back again and I

Know I won’t come back again

    So long my gateway drug

I gotta whole lotta feeling whole lotta love

For those nights we spent in a hole in the wall

Hammer in the bed and mirror on the ball and

You got the moves you got the truth

As we’re dancing to the rhythm of misspent youth

But I’m older now for what it’s worth

I got the real thing now

    So long my gateway drug

Lyin on the grass with the stars above

I got so much feelin so much love

But I got the real thing now

    So long so long

You always got the best of me

But now I see now I see

I got the real thing now

  • Belllike

    (Stars Turn Me On, 2012)

    Well here come

    All my tickets to ride

We were on a train for five days

And we met all kind of type

When we got to the tip of Italy

    Barbie she decides to leave

I was stuck there the middle of the night

    Wondering fight or flight

Or stick my head in the middle of the ground

    Sunshine blinds the window babe

    There's no crystal-balling time

There's no way to ask for just a little more laughter

    But other than that

    You'll be fine

There I am in Memphis in the middle of the night

With another crazy chick causing a fight

And I think how do I hitch my wagon

    To these stars?

And I pray maybe it's not too far

Before I'm living in San Francisco

With a man who cottons my every whim

And I'm standing there writing this song to you

Little chick in the middle of the night

With her head screwed down tight

    Sunshine blinds the window babe

    There's no crystal-balling time

There's no way to ask for just a little more laughter

But other than that you'll be fine

Cause here I am and there you be

Riding down the road listening to AC/DC

You're gonna wanna be just a little bit nicer

    All around

And not so stuck with your head in the ground

  • Marathon Runner

    (Francis Bakin, 2009)

I think today rather than work

Keep on going the usual route

Past City Lights bookstore and all of the suits

Just a little further on the usual route

Once I get to the overpass

I kick through the needles and the broken glass

    Though I never look behind

The city has already left my mind

Today I’ll keep down to the sea

This being landlocked it ain’t for me

Once I get a little look around

I bury my eyeballs in the sandy ground

What do you know I’m a marathon runner

Quick twitch trigger at the starting gate

What do you know I’m a marathon runner

Quick ditch lover on the fire escape

What do you know I’m a marathon runner

Late bloomed flower in a diamond mine

What do you know I’m a marathon runner

Catch me as I cross the line

Today I think rather than hurt

Gonna keep on going to the end of the earth

I know I left kinda fast

Gonna run from the future and forget the past

What do you know I’m a marathon runner

Quick twitch trigger at the starting gate

What do you know I’m a marathon runner

Quick ditch lover on the fire escape

What do you know I’m a marathon runner

Late bloomed flower in a diamond mine

What do you know I’m a marathon runner

Catch me as I cross the line

  • Slow Glow

    (Francis Bakin, 2009)

It’s a slow glow way down low

    Burn low candle

    I mark you with fireglow

    Slow glow

The bend of your jaw is a buffalo

The weight of your mouth has an ebb and flow

Slow glow way down low burn low

It’s a slow glow way down low

    Burn low candle

    I mark you with fireglow

    Slow glow

The call of your walk is a megaphone

There’s a glint in your eye as I watch you go

    Slow glow way down low

    Burn low

Tell me what am I supposed to do

With the other 23 hours in the day

And tell me what am I supposed to say

When everytime I’m ready you run away

Slow glow slow glow slow glow

    I want you so

Slow glow slow glow slow glow

    Don’t go

I want the buffalo in the fireglow

    Slow glow

Slow glow slow glow slow glow

    Don’t go

Tell me what am I supposed to do

With the other 23 hours in the day

And tell me what am I supposed to say

When everytime I’m ready you run away

  • Bulldog

    (Francis Bakin, 2009)

    I’m superstitious

    Drunkenly officious

Sure of nothing when we pass on by

Down the block from a terrorist mind

    Skating on ice

    Unreasonal treasonal

You can find me in the driving rain

    Criminal subliminal

I can make you feel the same way

    Heading back across the tracks

    Forsaking the rescue train

I can tell baby you feel the same

    Come on and bulldoze baby

    This bulldog heart of mine

Come on and save the day

    Come on and bulldoze baby

    This bulldog heart of mind

    Cause love saves the day

I’m traveling on a very thin wire

My blood is heated to atomic power

My mind is climbing some Texas clocktower

    Skating on ice

    Come on and bulldoze baby

    This bulldog heart of mine

Come on and save the day

    Come on and bulldoze baby

    This bulldog heart of mind

    Cause love saves the day

    Love saves the day
